Essential Steps for Preparing for Your PET/CT Scan

Preparing for Your PET/CT Scan: A Few Simple Steps Go a Long Way

If your doctor has ordered a PET/CT scan, a little preparation beforehand can make your visit smoother and help ensure the clearest possible results.

Before Your Appointment

A PET/CT scan requires some preparation that’s a bit different from a standard CT. You’ll typically be asked to avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours beforehand and follow specific dietary guidelines in the day leading up to your scan. Our scheduling team will walk you through exactly what applies to your appointment when you book, since prep can vary depending on what your doctor is checking.

If you have diabetes or take medication that affects your blood sugar, be sure to mention that when you schedule. Blood sugar levels matter for accurate results, and your prep instructions may need to be adjusted.

The Day of Your Scan

Plan to arrive a bit early. Wear comfortable, metal-free clothing, and leave the jewelry at home if you can.

This part often surprises people: there’s a resting period built into the process, typically 45 to 60 minutes, after your injection and before the scan itself starts. It’s a normal part of getting the most accurate images possible, so bring a book or a podcast to help you relax while you wait.

After Your Scan

Once you’re finished, you’re free to go about your day. There’s no downtime or recovery needed. Your physician will receive your results, and our team works to make sure that turnaround happens quickly.

Why Prep Matters

Following the instructions you’re given, from diet to activity level, helps make sure your results are as clear and reliable as possible the first time. That means fewer surprises and faster answers for you and your doctor.
