My Doctor Ordered a PET/CT Scan—What’s Next?

A PET/CT scan is a powerful imaging technique that combines the functions of a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan and a Computed Tomography (CT) scan. This scan provides detailed pictures of the inside of your body and helps doctors diagnose and monitor various conditions. If your doctor has ordered this scan, you might be wondering what comes next. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you prepare and understand what to expect.

Step 1: Scheduling Your Appointment

After your doctor orders a PET/CT scan, the next step is scheduling your appointment. Your healthcare provider typically will provide you with a referral and will set up your appointment. Ensure you choose a facility with a reputation for high-quality imaging and patient care like Bluegrass Regional Imaging.

Step 2: Preparation Before the Scan

Preparation for a PET/CT scan begins a few days before your appointment. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

Dietary Restrictions: You may be asked to follow a special diet for 24 hours before your scan. This often includes avoiding carbohydrates and sugars. Instead, focus on proteins and non-starchy vegetables.

Fasting: On the day of the scan, you’ll likely need to fast for several hours. This means no food or drink, except for water, to ensure accurate results.

Medications: Inform your doctor about any medications you’re taking. Some medications may need to be adjusted or paused temporarily.

Clothing: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. You may need to change into a hospital gown for the scan, so avoid wearing jewelry or metal objects.

Step 3: Arriving at the Facility

Arrive at the imaging center on time, as the entire process, including preparation, can take a few hours. The staff will check you in and guide you through the process.

Consent Forms: You’ll fill out necessary forms and provide your medical history. This information helps the radiologist interpret your scan accurately.

Intravenous Line: A small intravenous (IV) line will be inserted into your arm. This is how the radiotracer (a small amount of radioactive material) is administered. The radiotracer helps highlight areas of interest during the scan.

Step 4: The Scanning Process

Once the radiotracer is injected, you’ll need to wait for it to travel through your body. This usually takes about an hour. During this time, it’s important to stay still and relaxed.

The Scan: When it’s time for the scan, you’ll lie on a cushioned table that slides into the PET/CT scanner. The scanner is a large, doughnut-shaped machine that captures images of your body. The process is painless and typically takes 30-45 minutes.

Post-Scan Instructions: After the scan, you can usually resume normal activities immediately. Drink plenty of water to help flush the radiotracer from your system.

Step 5: Receiving Your Results

The images from your PET/CT scan will be reviewed by a radiologist, who will send a report to your doctor. Your doctor will then discuss the results with you and outline the next steps in your care. PLEASE DO NOT CALL OUR OFFICE FOR RESULTS. WE WILL NOT GIVE THOSE TO PATIENTS. YOU WILL RECEIVE THE RESULTS FROM YOUR ORDERING DOCTOR.
